You have a point, Dave. At least in Gen III the player wasn't called much at all. He or she could go to the Poke Nav themself when itching for a battle.
Still, I like G/S/C/HG/SS for many reasons, but I can see clearly that the phone thing is a great premise for a joke like the one VSD posted.

I don't mind the calls.
In fact, I sometimes walked around with my Manectric first in my party so I would get more calls.
(That's the overworld effect of Lightningrod)

I like the battles that come with the calls, and the calls overall, but after a while the pointless "Lolmypokemonscutelol" comments get as annoying as meeting ten straight wild Poochyena on Route 102 when trying to encounter a Lotad, Ralts or Seedot.
Perhaps this discussion is for another thread...
