It's all happened to the best of us. When it comes to the mystic and the unknown appeal of a fresh game, legends and myths tend to form. Speculation turns into persistent rumours, trying to impress your friends leads to whoppers about fake accomplishments and adventures.
What gaming lies, fibs, myths etc did you believe in for the longest time? Any you -still- believe in that you refuse to give up on until otherwise proven false?
When Generation II first came out and the Happiness from Pokemon Yellow was officially expanded upon, a whole slew of rumours on what helps and hurts happiness were compiled by very knowledgeable and experienced pokemaniacs.
However, browsing through the various Pokemon sites just today, I come across this...
UP UNTIL TODAY, from Generation II all the way up to HG/SS, I fully believed in those three bolded points. I kept my newly-caught Happiness Evolution pokemon in the box until I was good and ready to start happiness-training them just so I can knock it out at one go, and any Pokemon that I'm Exp Share training gets at least a second of face time, solely for that happiness boost that wasn't there.
Wasn't I silly? ;D

I don't really remember believing any lies in videogames except Pikablu and Bill's Garden

Aw man, I forgot about Pikablu entirely. I used to ALWAYS rename my Marills "Pikablu" just because we felt it fit better than "Marill". Kind of like a precursor to the whole Smugleaf/Snivy thing.
Course, I believed anything they told me back then, seeing as they had the games and the means to play them and all I had was an anti-fun dad.
"Mags, use the Master Ball on the first Pokemon you see, you'll be able to get more from the President!" "Cool! Hey look, a Raticate! Master Ball, GO!"
"Mags, if you beat the Elite Four 100 times, you get to fight an even STRONGER team full of Lv.100 Mews! And if you beat them, you get to KEEP a Mew!" "...Well you were right about that Missino. thing, so I believe you, but ah... yeah, you do that."

I don't know why, but when I was five and playing Yellow (With my bitchin' level 100 Pikachu and Mewtwo) I was convinced that if I beat the E4 365 times in a year and go to Bill's house he would let me into the teleporter and I would go to a secret place filled with Dragonite.
Nobody told me this, I just convinced myself about this.
I got to 200.

And as for lies I believed in, well, I can't really call it a lie, but I thought that Dunsparce evolved. I caught one at the Sevii Islands in FireRed, and trained it p to level 100. Once I realized that I had done all of that for nothing, I laughed and pretty much made it a permanent member of my team. I'm not sure if this is what caused my love for Dunsparce, but I know that I can't be the only one who tried this.

However, some things, though frequently reported, aren't part of the Generation II modifier. The following are actions that do not affect a Pokémon's happiness, either positively or negatively: * Putting a Pokémon in Bill's PC * Healing a Pokémon when weak and injured * Giving a Pokémon a hold item * Using a Pokémon in battles * Winning battles with a Pokémon Whoa, whoa, whoa! Those things really do NOT affect a pokémon's happiness in any way? I've been living in a lie.

Once I realized that I had done all of that for nothing, I laughed and pretty much made it a permanent member of my team. I'm not sure if this is what caused my love for Dunsparce, but I know that I can't be the only one who tried this. I was too much of a pro Pokeanalyst during those pre-Internet days. Without Serebii or GameFAQs to fall back on, the only way to know how many Pokemon you were missing and where to find them was by analyzing your Pokedex, seeing what and how many blank entries you had around your mon. So, unfortunately, I learned earlier on that Dunsparce wasn't meant to grow. I did think he was awesome though, and really wished I could have used him... but darnit, he didn't fit into my all-Water team! I make leeway for Ice, however, and I've ALWAYS been in the market for a (non-Wingul) Water/ or Ice/Flying mon to fill in some defensive gaps. I thought Delibird would be an Awesome addition to my team. I worked so hard on it, leveling it up to see what awesome moves I could give it... I know, right! I even went so far as to make my Pokemon hold Potions if they had nothing else to hold on to! Although, now that I'm looking through Psypoke since Serebii is blocked here... It looks as if Delibird might actually be a viable option through breeding and TMs - specially now that they're reusable. Hmmmm, I might have to dirty my hands with Pokehusbandry after all, this generation...

Pelipper is actually a pretty good Pokemon >.>
Video Game Lies... that trick where you can evolve a pokemon like Kadabra with a special box trick. I spent well over an hour each day for a month trying every possible movement... didn't work.

Here's something that I thought was a lie until a friend showed it to me: The cloning trick in Gen I/II. IIRC you put the Pokemon you wanted to clone in an empty box, let's say box one. Then you moved it into another empty box, let's say box two. While it was saving you turned off the power. If done right you would reset the GameBoy and find that the Pokemon you wanted to clone would be in both box one and two.
I cloned about twenty Ampheros by doing that. I loved them.

I shamelessly exploited whatever cloning glitch I could the first two generations. Oh! And I totally forgot. In the first generation, my friend led me to believe that status changes made during combat have the risk of sticking. So, something we ALL did was, when facing Gary in Cerulean City, spend the entirety of the battle against his Abra using as many stat-reducing moves against it as we could - Defense, Accuracy, you name it - to make the fight against his Alakazam at the end of the game easier. Heck, that misguided belief was why I used Djinns spectacularly in Golden Sun during every single round of every battle... until I realized that my stat changes were temporary "...did I just gain a defense boost from that move...? EXPLOIT! Boom boom boom boom boom...!"

Oh, I did something similar to that. When my Pidgeot used Agility in battle, I used it until it said "Pidget's Speed stat can't go any higher!". When I read that, I gaped in awe, quickly defeated my enemy, and checked my Pidgeot's Stat page expecting it to be 9999 or something. And I think you all know that it sadly wasn't...

I used to believe there was a special area within the computer room that oak takes you to at the end of generation 1 where it was possible to catch Mew.
I also used to think the truck by the ss Anne has a purpose, to the point where I would trade for a pokemon that knew cut just so I wouldn't trigger the boat leaving. Later on I'd surf back over and try to use strength on the truck. I wasted days trying to do stuff to it.

Two things I used to believe: 1. Stat changes in battle carried outside of battle as well (I was so annoyed whenever my defense lowered and thought it ruined my pokemon forever ) 2. I can't believe no one has brought it up but the various pokeball tricks I still click various buttons to try to get an auto capture >.>

Swimming, asking about the pokeball trick is like asking if you ever thought the Tooth Fairy was real. Of course everyone thought so.
I thought there was a secret boss in Mega Man 2 that you can only get to from Quick Man's stage.

Swimming, asking about the pokeball trick is like asking if you ever thought the Tooth Fairy was real. Of course everyone thought so. I'm still on the fence about the Tooth Fairy. Of COURSE she isn't real, but... I pulled an experiment when I was a kid. Losing a tooth, I slept in the living room one night while everyone else watched TV. I'd pretend to sleep for a few minutes, jolt up and check the pillow. Pretend to sleep for a few minutes, jolt up and check the pillow. Most times, nothing. Put my head down, closed my eyes, BAM! Dollar bill! I was so excited, undeniable proof that the Tooth Fairy actually stopped by, since I was waking up too frequently for my parents to be sneaky! Likewise, I don't think I'll EVER stop believing in the Hold A technique, which was our local variation, or Holding A Just Before The Ball Opens Over the Pokemon, as I personally do, or variations thereof. I'll see the math, I'll see the explinations, and quite frankly I KNOW that it doesn't work that way... but it just works too often for it to die for me. Heck, when I first tried it, I caught a Caterpie with my first throw without even trying. Heck, I can catch about 4/5 low-level Pokemon with just whipping my ball out and hitting it right. So in my world, it at Least works flawlessly for the weaker mons.
