With me being gone for like, a million years, I found a new game that I have been playing forever since then. I wanted to share it with you guys. It's called Defense of the Ancients, other wise known as DotA , the reason I wanted to bring this up is the new Valve title named DotA 2 that is coming out next year. Now, the game has premiered at Gamescom with a Tournament, the prize pool being $1,600,000 (watch here). Now the game is a bit complicated to newcomers, and I really don't want to explain in this thread what the game is, so you can either read the Wikipedia page, or my currently work in progress article on an introduction to DotA (Which is for a contest for a DotA 2 Beta Key).
Anyways, I wanted to know if people heard of this popular mod for Warcraft 3 before this thread. So I opened up a poll and um, if you have heard of it. mind telling me if you play the game? I really would want to play with people from PX if possible.
I'm back by the way.

I exclusively play League of Legends because I'm lame. For people who will inevitably not know what anyone here is talking about.. *cough* daveshn *cough* DotA and League of Legends are of a genre called MOBA. Another popular MOBA title is Heroes of Newerth. MOBA stands for Multiplayer Online Battle Arena. It's basically a game that uses Real Time Strategy controls, except instead of controlling an army, you are controlling a single unit with a variety of powerful skills. Usually there are two teams with very weak AI units spawning in both sides. If left alone, they would be locked in an eternal stalemate, and this is where your unit comes in. Your unit is much more powerful than the countless pawn AIs eternally spawning and it's your job to clear the path for your minions and then ultimately destroy the enemy base. Think of it as Tug-O-War except pushing instead of pulling. If you are realistically considering playing a MOBA there are 3 primary options: Defense of the Ancients - The original. I personally think it feels dated. You need to have Warcraft 3 to play this. League of Legends - A standalone game made by a group who made a pretty popular DotA variant in Warcraft 3. It attempts to slightly stray from DotA making some aspects more accessible to newer players. Not only is it a standalone game, it's also completely free. I really enjoy League of Legends because of it's colorful characters and the fact that it doesn't quite take itself seriously. Heroes of Newerth - Like League of Legends this is also a standalone game. The atmosphere of the game is a lot darker and serious, and overall the gameplay is pretty much 'DotA if DotA wasn't a Warcraft 3 mod'. It was formerly Pay to Play but is now completely free. All 3 games have the shittiest, newbie unfriendly communities you will ever see. It is recommended you do as Shadane says and play with friends.

Thanks for explaining it, I really didn't want to introduce the genre (if it is considered one). Anyways, have you seen how well DotA 2 is going? I personally am excited and anticipating the day the DotA 2 Beta goes public.

I gotta admit, it does look pretty great. I'll definitely check out Beta news, but it's not exactly an instant buy for me, but the very first time it goes on sale, if at all(and knowing valve/steam it will), I'm definitely grabbing it. Also, with the amount of games imitating DotA, I'd say that MOBA pretty much has solidified itself as a genre. Heck, not even 2 weeks ago another one has popped up as F2P on Steam. store.steampowered.com/app/90530/?snr=1_4_4__103_1(It looks hilariously like a reskin of League of Legends.)

I used to dabble in DotA back on War3. Heck, I played the very first map when it was on Reign of Chaos.
However, I've stopped playing. Took too much of my time. Naix was my boy when I stopped. Rage + Open Wounds was a vicious combo that only a perma-stunner could beat.
Vengeful Spirit was the one before that. But I stopped when her ultimate couldn't swap creep anymore. Seriously, that ability made her an escape and ambush ARTIST.

Most people speculate that the Open Beta is going to be free until they add in all the heroes (or champions in LoL terms). Which may take a while, so I am hoping the beta is spanned over a period of time.
Also, the amount of assholes in these types of games never ceases to amaze me.
Edit: Vengeful can swap creeps again, you just need to buy a 4200 gold item... And I never found Naix that strong, its all about Invoker nowadays.

I was able to kill Drow and her chicken in the Sentinel woods and snatched the quarterstaff the chicken was carrying. Well, since the build I was going for didn't need it, I asked if anyone on my team wanted it. Bounty Hunter (on my team) asked me why I was giving it away and I explained. He shouted that I had to give it back to Drow because (and I'm not sh itting you) "Taking their items isn't honorable." Yes, he said that. I told Drow what he said and even she didn't care if I kept it. But Bounty Hunter sold all his items, bought chickens, and rage quit because I didn't give it back.
