It commemorates the anniversary of the great Gunpowder Plot at whose head was a guy named Guy Fawks. It is a very interesting tale that is surprisingly part of my AP Euro exam. He wanted to blow up parliament on the one day when the entire royal family would be there. So he teamed up with an accomplice and rented a room underneath the parlimentary hall where he stored several dozen barrels of gunpowder underneath even more firewood.
On the night before the scheduled meeting of parliament a general threat was put out saying that someone intended to kill the king. So the guards searched the building and only found a delightful chap named "John Johnson" busilly moving firewood about. Well the guards found nothing and waited a little bit before finally conducting a second search. This time they asked "John" about the unusual amount of firewood he had stored. Then they asked him to move some of it. Well eventually they spotted the barrels and cancelled the meeting saving the king. Guy Fawks and his accomplice were charged and executed.

No it isn't. You probably haven't heard it yet. Or possibly, it was said, but you weren't there to experience it...<_<
