One thing I never figured out: why did GameFreak slug Giovanni by demoting his Rhydon to a second Rhyhorn? Confounds me.
Personally I have never played these games, but from what I have seen of them, I think I prefer Emerald over them.

I haven't played them either, but my friend has played a FireRed ROM.
I don't think he finished it, though. His computer crashed at one point and he lost all his ROMs.

Well I like Fire Red because it has more replay stuff than Sapphire and Ruby

I like LeafGreen.

These games were the best thing Nintendo ever did. They brought us good games again, gave us legit ways to complete the pokedex (Hear that, we don't need you HGSS ), created the idea that the E4 should change and improve, and, best of all, they gave us the VS seeker. Wonderful, wonderful games.

The fact you can get you're starter at its final level before the 3rd gym is also nice.
