They've more or less been going out of business for a while, only now that it's going full blown. Shame too, not much else in the way of book stores around here outside of BN, and I don't particularly care for them. -_-

I love Barnes & Nobles, and they really are a much better bookstore than Borders...
...but they were out of Nooks and Amazon was out of Kindles around the holidays, so I had to settle for a Kobo from borders. Thanks goodness Kobo is a separate company, the pieces of crap have broken twice on me and I had to send in for replacements.
All in all, I couldn't care less that Borders is going under.

The Border in my mall just had a sale 90% off, then closed like 2 days later. Where on earth am i gonna put the 30 books i bought.
There is a sign saying that 2 other locations are still open in New Jersey. i think i will check those out to see when they will be closing down and get myself a couple dozen more books.
All in all, I knew this was going to happen eventually. I remember when the mall and the various stripmalls near me had maybe 8-12 book stores spread between them. After that border closed down we have maybe 2 major chain bookstores, and I'm not too sure about mom and pop stores, I've only ever seen one though.
I can completely understand why this is happening, books are cumbersome, expensive, easy to ruin, difficult to store, and somewhat uncomfortable to read when compared to electronic books and e-readers. I understand but it still bothers me, i have read lots of books using ipods and kindle and whatever, but its just so much less...something, i don't know what but it just doesn't feel the same. I have no doubt bookstores are going the way of record stores and movie rental stores. I'm guessing in less than a decade we'll just have one or two per state that are just there for nostalgia value, while most are purchased online either with hard copies through mail or electronically downloadable.
Thinking this makes me feel really old though, since i hear lots of people of previous generations talk the same way about records and vhs tapes and whatnot.

I went yesterday to the local borders... it was CRAZY in there. I didn't buy too much but I definitely am going to miss that store and wish that it hadn't gone out of business
